COLOUR CONSISTENCY
As with traditional wood, so with Eveneer Prefinished surfaces it is not possible to guarantee an absolute consistency in colour between one batch and another. Therefore, a slight colour difference between two sets of panels cannot be considered a defect.
REACTION TO LIGHT
All woods, including Eveneer Prefinished, react to direct and indirect light, both natural and artificial (such as incandescent and fluorescent lamps). Therefore a change of the surface colour and appearance over time is a natural characteristic, not a defect. In particular, heat and humidity will interact with light to accelerate the ageing process. Furthermore, when exposed to direct and strong light, pastel coloured items can undergo sudden and irregular changes in the original colour.
Eveneer Prefinished can be handled stocked and worked mainly as a traditional HPL sheet. However, some specific features of wood surfaces require particular care.
STORAGE
Eveneer Prefinished sheets must be stacked flat, horizontally, face to face, at an ambient temperature between 10C and 30C and a relative humidity between 40% and 60%. If the sheets are to be rolled, care should be taken to avoid bending or cracking. Contact Elton Group for rolling instructions. It is not recommended that the veneer be stored in rolls.
As for all wood surfaces, they must be protected from sunlight and humidity. Wrap in dark, opaque plastic to assure stability.
The sheets are always to be handled by 2 people.
PEEL-OFF FILM
Eveneer Prefinished is supplied with a clear protective film. We recommend that you leave the film on the surface while working the veneer. Colour uniformity and quality checks should be carried out on the sheets before working with the veneer. The protective film is clear enough that you may inspect the material without removing it. When in doubt peel the film in the area, or up to the area that is suspect. The recommended shelf life of the peel-off protective film is 1 year. After this date the adhesive may begin to react with the polyurethane surface. Please check the manufacture date on the peel-off film.
SUBSTRATES
Typical substrates are plywood, MDF and particleboard. The more resistant the substrate is to dimensional change (shrinking and expansion from changes in humidity and temperature) the better the result. The substrate must be smooth and free of grease, wax, dust, oil, silicones, etc. All raised areas must be sanded or filled so that the surface is smooth. The substrate must be uniform in thickness.
CONDITIONING
Before application it is absolutely necessary to condition the Eveneer Prefinished sheet and substrate in the same place for at least 24 hours.
COUNTERBALANCING
To ensure appropriate counterbalancing it is advisable to use the same type of product, although HPL with characteristics that match those of the face may also be used. In any event, specific production tests should be carried out to assess the appropriateness of the product. Taking into consideration the dimensional tolerances of the substrate, a <3.5mm/1m bow on all liner backed laminated panels and <2.5mm/1m on all G2S laminated panels is standard.
APPLICATION TIPS
A good vinyl adhesive is recommended for stronger adhesion.
FLAT PRESS
Eveneer Prefinished sheets can be adhered in a hot or cold press at a maximum temperature of 60 – 70C and with pressure values suitable to the kind of glue used. Clean platens thoroughly to avoid dents and damage to the finished surface. Damage to the polished surface caused by particles between the metal platens and the surface is difficult to repair. The protective film must be perfectly laid out on the surface to avoid thickness-related marks. Platen glue must be applied in a quantity such as to avoid lateral leakage under pressure and damage to the decorative surface. When using heat-hardening glue, the press temperature should never exceed 105°/110°C for longer than one minute. Too high pressure and temperature as well as too long in the press may cause: panel bowing, release of glue from the protective peel off film onto the surface, irregular variation of the finish brightness or even deterioration of the polyurethane surface with a consequent irreversible change of wood colour.
POSTFORMING
Eveneer Prefinished can be post-formed utilising similar equipment and techniques used with HPL. The post forming temperature is 145°C. In the static postforming process, an excessively rapid rate of plug fall in conjunction with a failure to properly regulate the temperature can lead to fractures on the curve. If the plug stays on the decorative surface for too long it may cause a blistering effect on the polish. In the dynamic postforming process, if the panel moves forwards too quickly fractures may form on the curve. The edge that is being sheathed must be of regular and constant curvature along its entire length. Glue applied to the surface must be of appropriate grammage in order to avoid detachment and surface defects. The pressure rollers and bars that make up the curving envelope must be kept very clean, be accurately regulated along the outline of the curved edge, and be fully sheathed in plastic (the rollers) of between 50 and 80 Shore hardness. When post-forming with the wax finish it is important to remove the protective film prior to form. If the protective film is not removed prior to the post-forming the film will burn and adhere to the veneer.
Given the complexity of different processes, industrial production tests are always advisable.
EDGES
Finish any exposed edges of the Eveneer Prefinished sheet on your finished product to prevent moisture absorption into the timber layer. This is most easily done with an aqua stop pen.
CUTTING
Panel saws or table saws may be used to cut Eveneer Prefinished before or after lamination. Panels should not be machined within 24 hours of pressing. Routers for trimming edges after bonding must have a smooth, clean base plate, so that the surface of the veneer will not be scratched. Use carbide-tipped bits with ball bearing guide rolls. Keep the bits sharp. Drilling into Eveneer Prefinished may be done with standard wood bits or with router bits. Use a flat, smooth or fine file for a final edge finishing. You may consider applying a light or dark stain to the edge to hide the phenolic line.
For the specifier and end user
In general, timber veneered surfaces should be kept clean and dry, out of bright light, in a controlled environment.
Eveneer Prefinished surfaces are easy to clean using a damp cloth and mild soap or non-abrasive wood cleaning products. Do not use abrasive cleaners, pads, or harsh solvents. Do not allow any solvent, acetone or trichloroethylene to come in contact with the surface. Accidental spills, splatters or over sprays should be wiped off immediately with a soft cloth and mild soap. If done immediately the solvents should not have an effect on the veneer. Alcohol, ammonia and other light solvents may be used for tougher stains.
Dusting
Use a soft dry cloth or feather duster.
Polishing
Use a high quality furniture polish and a soft dry cloth. It is recommended the polish used not contain any silicone as this may cause re-coating or refurbishment problems at a later date. Do not use harsh cleaners, chemicals, bleach, ammonia or solvents that affect the surface finish. Abrasive cleaners will of scratch the surface and reduce the visual clarity.
Extreme Temperature Changes
The expansion or contraction of timber due to extreme temperature changes may cause damage to the surface coating. Care should be taken in air conditioned or heated environments or next to windows to keep temperature changes within reasonable limits. Use heat resistant place mats under hot items to avoid heat damage.
Spillages
Spillages should be cleaned with a damp cloth as soon as possible as moisture may cause damage to the coating. High humidity, steam and excessive water in contact with the coating may cause the coating to crack and if it gets under the coating causes staining of the veneer surface. If spilled, chemical substances and alcohol should be removed immediately from all veneered surfaces.
Dirty or Greasy Marks
After first wiping with a dry cloth, wipe with a cloth lightly dampened with a mixture of water and a high quality furniture polish. Persistent dirty or greasy marks may be removed with a mild, nonabrasive proprietary cleaner appropriate for the type of surface finish. The appropriateness of the cleaner should be sought from the surface coating or cleaner manufacturer. The effect of the cleaner on the surface should be tested on a hidden or a less conspicuous section of the finished veneer surface.
Bright light and UV
Direct sunlight, very bright indirect light and excessive heat should be avoided on all internal veneered surfaces because fading, bleaching or colour changes to the surface coating and the veneer may occur. Use curtains, blinds and UV filter-membranes on windows to reduce the intensity of the light. Excessive hot sunshine may dry the veneer surface more quickly than the veneer substrate thereby causing small surface checks parallel to the grain to appear and possibly damage the surface coating.
For the manufacturer
Veneer and veneered panels should not be exposed to bright light, excessive heat, high-humidity, chemicals, water and other liquids. Avoid even temporary contact with water and other liquids and avoid any moisture on the product surface. Store flat at least 200mm from the floor and keep covered with plastic sheeting and/or a cover sheet. Keep the humidity range of the storage area between 40% and 70% (RH). Do not drag/slide sheets across one another.
Eveneer Prefinished is supplied with a clear protective film to the face. We recommend that you leave the film on the surface while working the veneer. Do not peel back the film from part of the sheet for an extended period of time as this may cause the exposed area to change colour in relation to the unexposed area. When cleaning the face after edging please trial first on an offcut as some cleaners/thinners can cloud the lacquered face of both edging and sheet. Seal all exposed/cut edges on your finished product to prevent moisture absorption into the timber layer. This is most easily done with an aqua stop pen.
When transporting veneer, care must be taken to keep it dry, protected from air/wind/light and clean from road dirt and dust. As in all wood working operations, it is essential that adequate protection is taken against the contact and the breathing of wood dust when processing, and that normal workplace hygiene practices are followed.
