EB Interiors reinterprets natural coastal elements in an unexpected way.

Subverting expectations when it comes to a coastal home, Sanderling by EB Interiors draws direct reference to its beachside locale, but through a restrained, mature and evocative palette. Grounding the project is a subtle, grey-tinged Elton Group Eveneer timber veneer. The colour and finish were chosen for the deep sand colour it alludes to—reminiscent of wet sand beneath clear coastal waters.

Hannah Mathieson, interior designer at EB Interiors and design lead on the project, shares that the veneer ‘tied back beautifully to our original concept,’ as it added a warm, coastal finish that enhanced the other materials.

From the outset, the project was built on a strong architectural concept developed by O2 Architecture. The architecture features an extensive use of raw concrete that provides a robust canvas for the design. The location played a significant role in shaping the design intent. Nestled in a coastal setting with sand dunes and a natural park as its backdrop, the home needed to be both practical and low maintenance, suited to a family lifestyle that includes teenage children. The use of concrete and marble provide a modern, minimal feel, softened by the generous application of timber veneer.

The joinery throughout the home, by Leading Edge Kitchens, is executed with precision. Material combinations not only elevate the visual appeal but also maintain a balance between modernity and natural warmth. Full height internal pivot doors are clad in Eveneer. So too are the carefully arranged wall panelling, and floor-to-ceiling shelving.

Leading Edge Kitchens brought exceptional craftsmanship and technical expertise to highlight the natural beauty of the Eveneer Raw Xilo Sand veneer. Their meticulous approach—balancing grains, ensuring perfect alignment and refining every detail—elevates the material’s warmth and movement.

“We have worked with timber veneer on many projects and know the product performs exceptionally well,” Hannah says. “Elton Group’s timber veneer provided the warmth needed to counterbalance the harder surfaces throughout this home.”
