Kasumi, meaning mist, features a soft, ethereal grain effect through innovative tonal layering techniques in grey and blue. Futae, or two layers in Japanese, plays with scale, combining large and fine wood grains in white and grey to evoke textures reminiscent of bark or stone.

“[Futae was] designed to show the subtle play between natural and artificial,” explains Oki Sato, founder of nendo. “From afar, they form a harmonious whole with the surroundings. But from close up, intricate detail comes to the fore.”

The designs were the result of an intensive development process with ALPI. Sato noting that the brief was simple but unexpected, “to design new wood”. “When you change one element slightly, the final result changes drastically,” Sato says, adding that the whole process required a deep understanding of the engineering required.

With these two surfaces, ALPI continues its commitment to pushing the boundaries of timber design, creating surfaces that feel organic yet entirely new.
