Achieving the Australian aesthetic with natural timber veneers
18.05.26
How can designers achieve the quintessential Australian palette without relying on native timber resources? This is where Elton Group’s timber veneers step in: products that reflect the beauty and character of Australian species while carrying a lighter environmental footprint.
Through a strict curation of colours, tones and patterns, the selection of real Australian timber veneers in the Eveneer range reflects the authenticity of local species.
A contemporary response to Australian native timber veneers
From Tasmanian Oak timbers to the familiarity of Blackbutt – Australian species express a uniquely local context. For projects where visual connection to place is critical, Elton Group’s natural veneers offer a compelling story.
Eveneer Prefinished in Blue Gum Silk, for example, carries the soft pink undertones that define the warmth of natural Australian species. While Smoked Blue Gum Silk captures a rich, shadowy depth, its smoky tones achieved through a fuming process that enhances the timber’s inherent tannins. It makes for a finish that exudes expressive variety and sophisticated character.
These natural veneers are particularly well-suited to high-profile public projects – from Olympic infrastructure to university campuses and civic buildings – where designers want to signal a local identity with Australian design materials.
Australian surfaces with refined application
In addition to the traditional-style Australian veneer options, Elton Group’s Eveneer WoodWall collection makes it possible to introduce genuine timber surfaces into commercial and civic interiors in an efficient, refined way. Applied as easily as wallpaper yet crafted from real veneer, WoodWall transforms large-scale surfaces into richly textured, tactile statements.
Within the range are a selection of real Australian species, such as WoodWall Eucalyptus Quartered, with its peach-toned warmth and the darker, red-brown hues of WoodWall Eucalyptus Smoked for a more grounded, dramatic atmosphere.
A favourite among designers, WoodWall Spotted Gum Crown adds a lively interplay of colour variation that feels instantly recognisable, whereas WoodWall Spotted Gum Quartered has the same luscious tones, presented with a linear pattern.
Practical considerations for versatile applications of Australian timber veneers
To help streamline the specification process as much as possible, we’ve preselected the best material to be pressed. This highly edited and hand-selected process ensures the difficult and odd-shaped pieces are filtered out. To ensure maximum use, our Natural veneer species come in standard sheet sizes – a large 3000 by 1200 millimetre.
By pre-selecting and curating the ideal leaves together, we’ve found the patterns to get the longest possible runs to make sure the bundles flow, matching in colour and pattern. This ensures the most consistency for a natural product, even over large expanses.
Sustainability as the foundation
The drive for sustainability in Australian design is an expectation. Clients, communities and government bodies all look to the built environment as a place where responsibility must be visible and measurable. Elton Group’s veneer makes it possible to reflect the Australian aesthetic while supporting an accountable design economy.
Due to its production process, timber veneer is an inherently more economical product over solid timber. Most veneers are cut to a thickness between 0.5 and 0.85mm, which allows for 1000 slices of veneer to be cut from a single metre of timber. The Timber Veneer Association of Australia reports that timber veneer has a surface coverage approximately 40 times greater than 25mm thick solid timber.
In addition, Elton Group timber products are FSC certified and sourced from FSC and Controlled wood forests and plantations in Europe, USA and Australia.
By offering sustainable timber solutions that are responsibly sourced, globally certified and developed to last, Elton Group gives designers confidence that material choices contribute to a more environmentally conscious future. Just as importantly, they provide the palette, textures and tonal warmth that are vital to expressing a distinctively Australian identity.
