Bethan Laura Wood’s Vision Takes Centre Stage at the London Design Museum

Wood’s world is a rich tapestry of influences, from Art Nouveau to Memphis, she seamlessly blends historical motifs with cutting-edge materiality. Her work transforms everyday objects into vibrant, sculptural pieces that challenge conventional ideas of ornamentation and function. Across more than 70 objects on display, the exhibition explores her fascination with craft, collaboration and the storytelling potential of design.

A deep appreciation for materiality is at the core of Wood’s practice—something that resonates with Elton Group, particularly through her striking Kaleidoscope Cabinet. Commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria’s Women in Design program, the cabinet was crafted with custom-designed veneers from the ALPI archive, transformed into a contemporary bookcase. The piece is a symbol of privilege and education, while expressing a dedication to historical craftmanship and material. This commission underscores her ability to push the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship while maintaining an unmistakable sense of play. Seeing Wood bring her vision to life using ALPI’s extraordinary veneers shows her talent, skill and creativity—and Elton Group was delighted to be a part of the journey.
