PASTELS AND SOFT EDGES
There was an undeniable expression of softness and comfort in tone and form, which can be seen as a response to global uncertainty and economic pressures.
Key to this concept were references to nature and organic forms – a true celebration of the imperfect. A much-anticipated debut came from Japanese design studio nendo, whose creation of wood surfaces for ALPI—Futae and Kasumi – feature a unique layering of colour and scale to achieve a soft and subtle effect. To truly showcase the depth and delicateness of the new veneer designs, Oki Sato, the founder of nendo, created a set of curved bookshelves. The pieces communicate the relationship between timber veneer and craftsmanship, and are very representative of the soft, muted theme.
Also perfectly capturing gentle pastel tones is the release of the new Sottsass Pink. Developed by ALPI’s research and development team, based on Sottsass’ own handwritten notes from the archives, the new colour is subtle yet incredibly eye-catching. Sottsass’ original bolder veneers for ALPI, available through Elton Group, were regulars across Salone embracing a return to the past, and a love of all things Memphis.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
At a point where AI is dominating and many are hitting information overload—the call for natural finishes, shaped by hands has never felt stronger. Throughout the fair there were endless examples of painstakingly made traditional craftsmanship. This deep appreciation around craftsmanship is embedded into the DNA of ALPI’s manufacturing, where 17 people—34 hands—touch each single sheet as it makes its way through production.
Another of ALPI’s new designer releases speaks directly to this theme. Estúdio Campana’s new Agreste captures the essence of the desert in Northeastern Brazil. Through a process of upcycling and reclaiming materials, Agreste is pieced together to create a textural interpretation of a cracked, sunbaked earth.
Elsewhere, artisan and designer Bethan Laura Wood employed her flair for colour by exploring leather and weaving. Known for her intricate veneer joinery designs, she stepped away from her usual to create an installation for Serapian.
WHIMSY AND PLAY
Among the seriousness, there was still plenty of time for some light-hearted engagement. Childlike forms and colours, and childhood memories were inspiration and launchpads across several brands.
Piero Lissoni, ALPI’s creative director, celebrated 10 years in the role. To celebrate he released two new veneer patterns—String and Warp—that perfectly capture this sense of whimsy and playfulness. “I imagined the wood just as my pen began tracing a line on a blank sheet. It made me think back to the lined paper and graph paper I used for schoolwork,” shares Lissoni.
These veneers translate nostalgic graphics into an elegant, refined pattern. The colour palettes of khaki and blue for String, and burgundy and frost grey for Warp elevate them further.
