The property is at the end of a narrow access lane, below street level, with steep land providing unobstructed views of Woodford Bay, the Harbour Bridge, and the city skyline. Renovations aim to address these challenges by redesigning the carport and entrance, adding an internal staircase and a lift to improve access to the lower levels, and expanding the main living area to maximise views to the east.

Detail
This double storey Californian bungalow with lots of exterior charm has been reworked inside to create a modern, light-filled family home. The original large front rooms and entry hall were the perfect scale but beyond that was a tired extension containing a series of crammed spaces closed off from the vast north facing yard beyond. The potential was there. The rear of the house was completely reconfigured, including raising the ceiling height to create a feeling of more space whilst staying within the existing footprint. Space and storage has been maximised in key areas such as the family bathroom, kitchen, and laundry. With the addition of floor to ceiling, large spanning, bi-folding doors, the northern light has flooded in, and the connection between the interior and exterior has been strengthened. A Japanese – style minimalistic approach and simple palette has been applied to the joinery and entire interior creating a sense of calm and easy living. A layering of soft rugs, textiles and contemporary furniture has enlivened the interior with texture and colour.—Katherine Charlton Design

This mid century house was designed to take in its beautiful surroundings and the ocean view. The space was all there, the interior was just very tired and the exterior weather beaten. The layout was tweaked in some places to improve flow and function and all existing windows and doors were replaced and double glazed. Hardwearing, simple finishes have been used throughout and the new joinery designed sympathetically to the era of the house. The house now has a cohesive interior with striking elements that enhance the view.—Katherine Charlton Design
